cooking chicken in slower cooker

Options
Hi everyone

Doing a chicken for tomorrow (only two of us)

We will be out most of the morning so was thinking of putting it in the slow cooker so it is ready when we get back meaning I only have to do veg/trimmings and save on oven space (my oven is really small :()

Do I need to place it on anything?
Will it need any liquid in the cooker?
How long for it to cook?
Will I need to finish it off in oven to crisp it up?

Thanks everyone. Hope you have a great stress less day tomorrow all.

  • I usually put onion halves in with some water and sit the chicken on top. It will look really pealy wally when you lift the lid, pop it in the oven for 20 mins to colour and crisp up and it should be fine.
  • I just bung mine in upside down with no water.
  • I suppose we each have our own way of doing it. I cover the base of the cooking pot with water and put the chicken upside down on 4 balls of screwed up tinfoil. The pale skin doesn't bother me, I just take it off and chuck away.

    Thanks all

If I put it in upside down, will the skin crisp up better due to the fat dropping to the bottom of the pan?

I am not really worried about crispy skin, I don't have to eat the skin (much better for me if I don't :D)

If you're not going to eat the skin just discard it. It'll come off chicken very easily. Skin won't crisp in slow cooker.

  • I cook mine without liquid and stand the chicken on halves of onion. the skin is pale and doesn't crisp, but I throw it away so it doesn't bother me. It will fall from the carcass and taste beautiful

recipe says to put a lemon inside, I don't have any so will use a potato, I normally put a potato in the middle when I cook a chicken in the oven, never sure if its makes any difference though.
  • I dont bother putting anything in mine just stand it on sliced onion.

What is the potato supposed to do?
