I've lost track on this I'm afraid. I didn't give up on the principle, but was very disorganised in keeping track and completely lost track of this thread. Will do a rough tot-up though:
I said at the start that I was only going to allow overtime and eBay to count for half of the money, so I'll declare £1,008 as I'm absolutely certain I went a long way past that on these methods.
Three bank switches worth £300.
Bank account monthly rewards worth ~£100. Almost certainly more, but I'm estimating and can't be bothered to check in detail, therefore going on the low side. TSB was worth either £55 or £60 on its own, and I'm sure the ones I joined later in the year bumped me over £100.
Bank account interest - some, but I'm not counting it for the purposes of this challenge as I haven't bothered to do the work. Besides, for part of the year I was paying off debt, so that probably cancelled out any interest earned and then some.
Cashback - £125 from TopCashback (higher in reality however subtracting stakes for cashback which amounted to matched betting), £45 from CheckoutSmart, and I'm guessing £5 from Qmee. £50 from YouGov, slightly cheap as most of the work was done in previous years, but I'll take it. Swagbucks I'll declare £30 as I'm sure of that much, but probably higher.
Matched bets - ~£50 (cashback offers where I was up even if the bet lost, however the bets went on to win).
My rough total would therefore be £1,713 plus roadkill and any small amounts I've underestimated by.
Less than I'd hoped, but I'm happy overall. To answer my early question of whether I could pay for my laptop through new behavior while using it, the answer was clearly yes, however I was unable to achieve it within 12 months. That said, the laptop is still going strong and by about April/May 2017 it should have paid for itself.
In 2017 my goal is to make sure my consistent earnings through the likes of Swagbucks, TopCashback and CheckoutSmart is enough to offset a decent mobile phone contract. Anything on top of that (through those methods, eBay, bank switching and the like) should pay for those things that I need to have but shouldn't need to spend as much on as a want to. For example, I need to have a mobile phone, but a smartphone is a luxury I choose to have. I need a laptop, but any laptop would meet the absolute necessities - I choose to have a good one. Making myself pay for those things through boosting my income (and not counting overtime), seems like a good way of balancing my desire to have certain luxuries with my desire to save and be frugal.0 -
