Aren't these things disasterous for the environment? This decade's equivalent of the ring pull on carbonated drinks?

I work in Pastoral care in a secondary school and these things were a very short lived (as in about 2 months) Fad that died a swift death about a year and a half ago, which all of the staff were glad about because they just ended up being flicked across the classrooms.

Now if anyone can think of a useful/money making idea for the millions of these things that no retailer seems to be able to shift at any price, that would be brilliant...
