Late pay leading to bank charges

Hi everyone, I hope someone can give me some advice/feedback/whatever.
I had my lbm about 2 months ago and since then have made huge efforts towards cutting back and paying off my debts, but this month I was paid 6 days later than usual, and had standing orders and direct debits (including my rent) due to leave my account when there was very little money in it, meaning I've been charged by my bank :(

Would you say this is my fault for not stopping the SO/ DD in time to avoid charges? I should have been paid on friday and the SO for my rent went out yesterday. I knew my pay hadn't come through, but I forgot to stop the SO. I'm angry with myself and my employer - I've been working there for 18 months and am usually always paid on the 23rd, but there have been problems with late pay a couple of times before. The last time it was late I told him my rent went out on the 27th and he promised to ensure my pay wouldn't be late again, but when I complained this month he just said I should move my rent payment as "most employers pay on the last day of the month" - I know that, but I was basing my outgoings on what I thought were my reliable incomings!

The whole thing's just made me really down because I've been trying so hard with my debts and now I'll be charged £75 by my bank and I wish I'd put that money to paying off my debts :(
August grocery challenge:
budget £140
spent so far: £51.34

Total debt at LBM: £4120
Current debt: £3622

Proud to be dealing with my debts!

Your employer should pay the charges they should pay you on time and if they don't they are in breach of your employement contract. Take in a copy of the charges as tell them you want them to be covered and it clarifed when you can expect your pay.

As a cautionary tale, my employers had some problems where suppliers weren't getting paid, one month we got paid late and shortly after they went into administration, keep your eyes and ears open and if necessary look for another job, a business can go under very quickly.
  • Why don't you ask the bank to set up another current account linked to the one you already have? When you get paid (I'm assuming it is monthly) leave enough money in the 'number 1' account to cover all the DD's & SO's and then transfer the excess in the 'number 2' account. This then becomes the money you can spend for the month.
