My cutlery is blackened. We are buying new and don't want it to go the same way.My daughter's cutlery always looks lovely and it's always in the dishwasher. Does anyone use supermarket tabs but still have nice looking knives and forks?

It may be down to the salt, my DD accidentally 'Double Dosed' the salt in her dishwasher and ruined all her cutlery. it looked like it had been at the bottom of the sea for the last hundred years.
Some 'stainless steel' is not of the same quality as others and imported brands may not stand up to dishwashing.0 -
We used to use Finish dishwasher tablets & they made all the glassware go milky after a while. They also used to make our stainless steel cutlery develop rust spots.
We changed to Lidl dishwasher tablets at about a third of the price & have never had problems with the glassware or cutlery again.
You could also check the hardness or softness of your tapwater by going online to your water supply company website.
There will be a link somewhere that will tell you what it is.
Then go to your dishwasher salt settings & make sure you are not using too much or too little salt.

What is your cutlery made off?
There is stainless steel and there is stainless steel
You should have a mark on the back of the forks0 -

if it is a lower quality steal, then the dishwasher will cause corrosion
We have a set here, must be 60 or 70 years old and its only handwashed when its used. Even so there are slight black dots appearing0 -
I use IKEA cheapest cutlery £7.75 a set, always in the dishwasher and no problem, just bought a new set and you can't tell the difference between the new and older ones. I use Finish tablets when on offer but live in Scotland with very soft water so never put salt in the dishwasher. Its not that we have more patience as we grow older, its just that we're too tired to care about all the pointless drama0

Our water is practically solid.. I don't use salt in the dishwasher I use the fairy tablets.. the finish ones were horrid and didn't dissolve properly and caused all manner of breakdowns on my machines.
I have Asda cheap as possible cutlery and Viners super expensive cutlery and it all looks like new!
My daughter uses Tesco DW powder and her cutlery is fine and the MIL uses Aldi ones and hers is all nasty and yellowed.LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -

Don't worry the current government uses similarly tarnished utensils to cook the books.0
