Dairy free milk or substitute for tea?

Does anybody have any recommendations for dairy free milk or milk substitute?
I only have skimmed milk in my tea now (as cant seem to stand milk in cereals etc...) and even that seems to disagree with me.
I've tried soya milk and oatmilk, neither of which seem great in tea - so I'm looking for an alternative that isn't too costly - Any recommendations? Thanks N

Can you just train yourself to go without it, by reducing the amount you put in until you stop bothering?

I did this years ago with coffee. I found I either had no milk, or the milk I had was "off" so couldn't be used.... so, I just started drinking it black. It also made things easier when visiting other people as they then didn't have the wrong sort of milk, or put the wrong amount in ... asking for black means less opportunity to be drinking foul drinks away from home.

    Ditto with sugar.

I've gone from: "Splash of milk and 2 sugars" to "black, no sugar" - and now don't have to suffer other people's skimmed milk and demerara offerings :)

Thanks PasturesNew, I have done the same with sugar and have tried to take black tea (or with lemon) but I really dislike it. I'm at the 'just a small drop of milk' stage
If i leave the milk out altogether then I wasn't then even drinking tea, but especially in the winter I do like a cup of tea in the morning and mid afternoon to warm me up (don't like coffee!) - hence seeking a suitable alternative
  • I have the same problem with coffee, there is no substitute milk that tastes even vaguely decent and I have tried most of them. Luckily for me it is a lifestyle choice not a health issue. Have you tried the lactose free milk natbags? Maybe it's the lactose causing you problems.

quite a few dairy free milks are not great in hot drinks or take a fair amount of getting used to as they taste so different.
have you tried rice milk?(it comes in longlife cartons) its appearance is similar to skimmed milk and it doesn't really seem to have as strong a taste as some others nut/oat milks can have a very distinctive flavour/taste to them.

  • can you tolerate goats milk? I find it tastes just the same but is gentler on the stomach

I use the KOKO coconut milk, Alpro almond milk is also fine. I have no dairy due to allergies, lots of milks split in hot drinks but the KOKO and all of the Alpro milks are fine. I found that the milks in the fridge are more palatable to start with, now I have either

I have a lactose intolerance we use the Lactofree Semi skimmed it is a little expensive at £1.35 a litre but we don't use much in tea and I can't tell the taste difference between that and real milk. You can also get sachets which I take with me on my travels.

I don't take milk in tea - for one thing I don't like the taste, and for another milk reduces the 'health giving aspects of tea'.
and without milk you can really TASTE the tea. when I stopped using milk in tea I had to add a little sugar to make it palatable, and a little cold water to make it drinkable. it did take little time to get used to . I have reduced the sugar but still like to add a little cold water. and I cannot drink tea now with milk! or coffee either.
  • I am happy to drink coffee black or herb tea without milk obviously but I have found that skimmed milk has a funny taste to it so I still use a dribble of semi skimmed in my tea,but I only use UHT milk now anyway, as fresh milk I went off of about a year ago.
