Proper corned beef!

Options
Growing up my family made corned beef. Bought in any shop at the time, 20 years ago, was a lump of beef and it was boiled on the hob. This was in Ireland. I loved it. It used to just fall to flakes and was my favourite dinner with cabbage and potatoes!
I have never seen it in the uk but I'm now wondering if I've just looked in the wrong places? Surely it can't be totally unheard of here? Nobody knows what I'm on about when I mention it. I would love to get some. I will be shopping in Leicester if anyone knows where to get it.
My nana always called it proper corned beef hence the title :-)

I've seen the 'proper' corned beef on Man vs Food, so America knows what it is! When Adam Richman said corned beef and I saw it and thought I might actually like that!

Maybe search for fresh corned beef or salt beef.

Is this what you mean? If so it's made using brisket as Teahfc says.

to make corned beef you need salt cured beef or brined beef, your grandmother would have bought the beef ready salted/brined but you would probably have to soak the beef in brine yourself

search corned beef from scratch and it should show you how to prepare the brine and brine the meat before cooking

I've heard that it's enjoyed in NZ too. I'd also love to know if anyone knows where you can buy it already cooked, maybe sold as a joint? The ready sliced stuff just doesn't seem to taste the same as I remember corned beef. Love the idea of mash and cabbage with it...

I think this is what you're talking about. Bit unfair for it to be lumped in with corned beef. Cured beef would be more accurate. Pass me the bread and ketchup!

Thanks, that certainly looks like it! Unfortunately only available locally... :(
My OH has reminded me that we had a lovely corned beef pie from a farm-shop caf! during the Summer. We're going to revisit to see if they sell the Corned beef in their butchery department after the new year. We're on a mission now, will report back if we find it :)
