I would also suggest voluntary work. Find local charities, the really tiddly ones that may not even have a charity number. Offer to make a website. Website design/ hosting etc may not be your forte, but it will show off your technical skills and your ability to work with a client.
Local museums and archives are usually grateful for volunteer data entry clerks. Deadly dull, but will get you in the door with local authority managed sites.
1st line work is often people skills and really good common sense. The managers won't expect you to be brilliant at technical problems, but knowing how to deal with a problem effectively and competently is key. This includes knowing when you can't do something and handing the problem on in the most effective manner i.e. getting as much information as possible, working through the protocols, and handing on to the correct person. You would be amazed at how many 1st liners cannot even do that.0 -
I don't think local computer shops would help, after all, they don't tend to run domains like companies do, so you don't get experience of that. The best places to head for are hospitals and local councils. Some of the management in these places in IT are fools and would hire anyone.
I'm not saying you're a fool, far from it. My point is, they sometimes, if you get the right place, tend to ignore that you have no experience. Once you're in, then it helps.0 -
