5 year ignored debt

hi everyone,

back in 2011 i cancelled my contract with orange and had to pay a deactivation charge, which i couldn't pay at the time and i moved out of the country.
I have just moved back and i have recieved letters dated back for the last 4/5 years from orange and there solicitors saying that i owe around 700 pounds, which i assume is correct as i left it for so long.
i haven't been in contact with them at all and now that i'm back i need to try to sort this out and i don't even know where to start. obviously i have a CCJ which has also been ignored as i have been out of the country until now.

please help!

    Hi,

I`m assuming they are not aware of your current address in the uk, so to be honest, I`d stay under the radar if I were you.
If your not been chased for it, wait until you are, then make arrangements to deal with it.
If you really want to deal with bailiffs etc, then you could check your credit file and update your contact info, that would alert them to your new address and probably trigger new collection activity.

    Its up to you really.

    Hi

I agree that it’s probably best to leave it for now unless you’re actually contacted about the debt.

The £700 sounds high for a deactivation charge to me so if you are ever in a position where you need to tackle the debt you could request a breakdown of exactly what the £700 consists of and look into whether it can be challenged. You could potentially set aside the CCJ if you disagree with the liability, or if you need to just pay it you could vary it to instalments through the court so that you’re no longer in default of the judgement.
