36 free books

Hoping this is the right board... :)
This works on the same principle as the chain letter, but only involves you sending one book on to somone.
The idea is that you take the instructions and send a paperback that you liked on to 'person one' on the letter. You then photocopy the letter and put 'person two' in the 'person one' position and your own details in the 'person two' position. You then pass the letter with your details on to 6 people.
The idea is that each person you've passed the letter on to then sends one book each to 'person one', move your address up the list and pass the letter on to another set of people. It should mean that you get 36 books back.
I really want to take part. Thing is, most of my friends are on the list already so I am struggling to find people to pass this on to. In the interests of spreading this further, I was wondering whether anyone here would be interested in taking part? If so PM me and I will send you the details.
Of course, you could always pass on that free copy of Martin's book you got...

Do you really want 36 books sending (most of which you might have either read or aren't of interest)?!
Why not just get a group of people together and you forward one book to each other every week/month or whatever. This means that you will only be giving out your details to people you know and you can control the number of books.Torgwen.......... ...........0 -
Ahh - but then you'd have to buy more than one book. I'd get through 36 good books, and the others I can give to charity, 'release into the wild' with book crossing, or sell on ebay...

And anyway - I'm not going to give my address, going to give a holding address.

This is a simple Pyramid scam which you would have rightly binned without consideration if it had asked for a tenner rather than a book.
This particular one has been doing the rounds for over 10 years, usually targetting school kids!
The problem is that there are simply not enough people in the world for it to work, as you have found out as there aren't enough people you know to dupe in to taking part.
The first set of letters that go out require 6 people who each have to recruit 6, who each have to recruit 6.....
By the time the letter has gone out to the 10th level of participants, you've already exceeded the population of the UK! Those last lot of people will have sent a book and get nothing in return. For example if you can't recruit 6, then the person above you sure isn't going to get their 36 books!
I believe legislation is due in parliament imminently to make anyone promoting a pyramid gifting scheme liable to fines upto £5000.

I am not in favour of any Pyramid scheme - alright so we all have paperbacks lying around that we no longer need but sending them to others in the hope that we get some free books ? I am not sure this is a freebie !Your really can not beat a good bargain !!!0

Oh gee Rufus, and there I was thinking I was doing something nice! Just as well you put me back in my place on that one then.
Not asking anyone who thinks this is a scam to take part. Just thought there might be some other open-minded people like me out there who would like to be taken out of the reading 'comfort zone'.
But you just stay there in your cozy little narrow world.

KG, it's not a question of thinking it's a scam, it IS a scam. A simple pyramid scam. Perhaps propagated with the best of intentions, but the mathematics still won't work.
Think about it: Send one book and get 36 in return? Where would they all come from? Remember the saying - if it looks to good to be true...
I too often build up a backlog of books; I give 'em to Oxfam.
cheers

My point is that I don't care about the matematics. I don't care if I only get one book back if that book introduces me to a good auuthor and a fantastic read.
I get what you're saying and I appreciate your comments, I just didn't like Rufus' tone is all.
