brown basmati black scum?

Hi when I cook the rice I wash it then I need to bring to the boil and drain off the black scum first? I have white pans and when I wipe the scum off its black.
I want to get a rice cooker, but it defeats the object if I have to boil first? what is it? anyone else get this?

I used to find even white rice left a slight brown scum round the water level .... I bet this thread will just back up the fact that all rice has a scum of some colour or other.

Yes, my rice is slightly scummy too.
    I just ignore it.

In some meals i've started having more pasta where i use to do rice, simply 'cos it seems cleaner.

  • Apparently soaking the rice first gets rid of most of the scum. (for those who are bothered)

In all my rice-cooking years I have never encountered black scum.

A bit of scum is normal, it's just the excess starch from the rice particles. (Doesn't everyone rinse their rice before cooking to get rid of this?). But black? Sounds like there might be a mouse in the house :o

I use the absorption method so any 'scum' gets cooked into the rice, never rinsed rice either.
