My Mum's Cooker

My mum's cooker has had a broken door for about two months and she's had a nightmare trying to sort it out. Apparently she has a new warranty or an extended warranty of some sort from the retailer Currys. She's tried getting this fix through a third party who has had no luck getting parts (apparently). I'd like to know what her rights are from Curry's? According to her they have told her she can't expect resolution until the end of January because they also can't get parts (if I'm understanding the problem correctly).

I'm sorry this is vague, she isn't good in situations like this and I can't just wade in and get onto Curry's because it's not in my name.

My question is can she expect Curry's to simply replace the cooker if they can't do anything before the end of next month?

  • How has the door broken? User error, wear and tear or design defect?
  • I would say design defect. It's a pretty crappy design. When you need to open it you have to pull on the handle, rather than press down a latch to allow to open. So what happened the door shattered when it was opened once. I think the latch expands (it's metal) when it's hot and when you need to open the oven after using it you have to really yank the door and...boom. the door, a glass type material, shattered off the frame.

Long story short, door broken. :D

How old is the cooker? If it's more than a few months then it's unlikely that a replacement will be offered. I'd think about asking them for as much of a refund as they will go for and putting it towards buying a new oven with a better design.

I said that she has a new warranty that covers this.

Then read the terms of the warranty, that is your rights as far as the warranty is concerned.

Well if the warranty says she can get a new cooker, insist that they provide one. Personally I'm a bit doubtful that it will, but I can't see the wording from here.

The wording says that if a repair isn't possibly in a reasonable period of time then a voucher of equal value will be issued in order to purchase a new cooker. So is being expected to wait until the end of next month reasonable?

The warranty company probably would think it was.

Whether anyone else would agree, who knows? Your mother can either accept she has to wait or complain to the warranty company and if no joy, try a claim via MCOL.

  • Well, I hope that roast potatoes can be cooked in a microwave or christmas dinner is going to be rather different this year!
