Edit: Turning this thread into a blog of how and where I collect my nectar points, just to show they build up faster than you might think. - Note I do not own a car, nearly all of my points come from a weekly sainsbury's shop or from shopping online via nectar.com/eshops or other sites that a nectar card can be registered to.

Working in a nectar point giving petrol station, I very often hear from some customers that "nectar points aren't worth anything".
Whilst individually 1 point is normally worth the equivalent of £0.005 (or 0.5p), people are most often mistaken about the length of time it takes to accumulate a meaningful number of points and the amount of money needed to do so.

Deleted much of this 1st post as I recently found the MSE website relating to Nectar cards: I must have read it ages ago and forgotten! Please go there to find out more, I will simply use this top post as a summary of my Nectar point challenge.

from 9/1/16 I now have a 'focus project' eye tracking device for my pc which monitors where my eyes are looking at the screen, and therefore which adverts I am looking at more. 500 points for setting it up, and 1000 points a month for using it! All for just using my computer as normal.

Nectar balance summary: (will be updated every weekend after my weekly shop - online bonus point coupons used are included in the following week as they are not awarded at the till on day of purchase)

Figures taken from my weekly Sainsbury's till receipt (Nectar point balance before weekly shop)
Week 0: 2721 nectar (£13.60) (total just before week 1 shop)
Week 1: 2765 nectar (£13.78)
Week 2: 3678 nectar (£18.39)
Week 2.5: 3693 nectar (£18.47)
Week 3: 4654 (£23.27)
Week 4: 4789 (£23.95)
Week 5: 6248 (£31.24) no shop this week, total taken from nectar website
Week 6: Hols
Week 7: Hols
Week 8: 9129 (£45.65) - see post as to why I gain 3000 points whilst I'm not even here!
Week 9:

Example:

Sainsbury's recently sent out money off vouchers to nectar card holders, £4.50 or £6 off when you spend £30 or more (coupons individually dated for 5 consecutive weeks). If you normally spend this much and shop at Sainsbury's then that's £4.50 / £6 off a week right there. Also using all 5 coupons will give you a further 500 bonus points.
Lets face it, it's not hard to spend that much money in the last few weeks up to Christmas and New Year if you buy presents (DVD's / games etc) and alcohol!

Ok, so far we have spent the minimum of £30 and we get £6 off, and at least 600 bonus nectar points.
So far that's £24 for 630 nectar points (£3.15 in rewards)

Under normal circumstances (no vouchers used) It would take a spend of £63 to get that many nectar points!

***Tip: If you have a bonus nectar points coupon for an item and you see it in Sainsbury's reduced (because it's near the end of it's shelf life/damaged etc) you will still get the bonus points on the reduced item because Sainsbury's don't use generic price reduction stickers, they print out reduction stickers specific to a product.

630 points... That isn't including the bonus points for items that I selected via mycoupons that I would've brought anyway: bacon +40 points, mini chicken fillets +60 points, duck crown +150 points (not an everyday purchase, but after seeing the coupon suddenly decided to have duck for Christmas instead of turkey!)

Those 3 product specific coupons brings my total Nectar points up to a whopping 880 points (worth £4.40) for a single weeks food shopping spend of £24. Or just over 36 nectar points per £1 spent!
Oh and I almost forgot... by paying with my Sainsbury's credit card I get double points).
£44 spent,
910 nectar points total
worth £4.55!

After a year of similar spending/online coupons that's quite a sizeable fund to spend - but personally I wait until Nectar offers the chance to double up points for vouchers for days out/meals/store departments and use my nectar points to buy Christmas presents without spending any extra money at all!

I don't spend enough in relevant places to ever accumulate more than £2.50/year. Then I struggle to spend them due to their restrictions, rules and criteria. e.g. tried to spend them once and got "this is not your home store" - no, I was 200 miles away trying to buy my mum an easter egg!

For most food I check the Sains price of it's much higher than other supermarkets and where I actually buy those goods .... Sains is my nearest supermarket, I go there once a month and spend £3-5 at a push. Pushed the boat out last week when I bought some fish in sauces at £2 on a jolly whim.

    .

I believe that if you are not at your local store and you wish to spend points you can go to customer services and ask them to print a paper voucher out for the value of points you wish to use which will be accepted at the till

Websites which I shop at regularly to gain points:
Ebay (nectar card registered to account)
GWR (for train tickets - nectar card registered to account)

    (shops via nectar.com/eshops link)
Argos (pay online, collect at store)
    Rakuten
    Game
    Currys PC World
    Justeat

There are also lots of others which I don't shop at
