Christmas Soaps - does anyone care anymore?

This is still an annoying tradition i have to put up when i have to go to my mum's house at Christmas; the older generation who will watch the soaps religiously. Having to shut up, stop watching whatever film we're watching, whatever board game we're playing so the Christmas soaps can be watched is something i hate. Always depressing, long as hell and boring.

As you can tell i'm not a fan of soaps. I much prefer watching shows on Netflix now (i just do this casually), but most of the time i'm not even watching TV.

Do people still care about watching the soaps at Christmas or is this a 'tradition' that is dying along with the boomer generation? Is the christmas soaps thing a (welcome or unwelcome) tradition in anyone elses house even? Are soaps here to stay for longer or are their days numbered now?

I hate Christmas television, I wish they would just leave things as normal instead of watching a load of tinsel festivities or dramatic disasters, isn't it strange that it always seems to be one extreme or the other?

I would not say soaps are an older generation thing - most of my friends (but not me) are very into soaps. I'm 30, so I wouldn't say me or my friends were old.

Telling people to sit in silence is a little bit too far though. You could always leave if you are unhappy with the situation.
  • I used to watch a lot of soaps when I lived with my parents but now I hate them. There hardly ever seems to be a happy ending for the characters it's just one tragic event followed by the next. The Christmas episodes are always the most depressing and I couldn't sit through one now. If I were you I'd go into a different room and read a book!

P.s I'm 30 and I don't know anyone my age that watches soaps, there's far too many good series on netflix to watch!

I'm one of the older generation and I haven't watched a soap since Brookside folded.

I always thought that soaps were the sort of thing that younger people watch, there are so many younger characters in them than there used to be and so many more soaps in general.

I'm a "boomer" and may I point out that I'm not ready to die yet? I have always hated soap operas. Once, on the instruction of my boss who said it was absolutely essential to watch Coronation Street if living in the North, I switched it on. The story line was about a 12-year-old girl with a baby. I thought to myself "this bears no relation to my life", switched off and have never seen it, or any other soap, since.

You could always go wash up whilst those who want to watch them do so. :D

I don't think it's generational - just some people love their soaps and others don't have any interest.

Just take out your phone or Kindle or tablet and focus on something else whilst it's on if you are a quick washer upper or even go for a walk to walk off all the food.

I don't watch them any time of year.......and don't understand why there always has to be a disaster on them on the supposed happiest day of the year.

  • im 25 and I love the soaps, mind you ive hardly watched them this year as once the kids go to bed I fall asleep too and I cant watch them during the day as Im too busy, however recently theyve been left on more in the evenings whilst the girls play whih has been nice! I expect on xmas day they will be on, but I dont expect anyone to be quiet for them.. and whatever we watch on xmas day wherever I go to is very rarely heard, just a noise in the background of all the children in the family playing and their grandads winding them up so they dont sleep....
  • If only one or two people out of the group want to watch the soaps they should really record it or go into another room to watch it (like I do!) not force everyone to sit through it. Soaps are one thing that are REALLY boring if you don't know any of the storylines or characters.

I usually watch one or two soaps, but I'm not that bothered if I miss a few episodes. You can always check Twitter to see what happened.

  • I enjoy Corrie, and so do my two teenage boys. We record it though, and would never dream of watching it when we have anyone round. The TV is usually turned off if we have visitors - I think it's rude to leave it on. Guests come to spend time with us, not watch our telly.
