The lower the petrol price goes, the greater the tax take as a percentage. This is why all the talk of Osbourne looking to increase fuel tax is a non starter.

If current tax is 75% then 80% doesn't seem that big a leap.

Especially when policians are both trying to raise money and save the planet.

    Really?

You don't see forsee the obvious public reaction to fuel being 80% tax and the chancellor himself forcing it above £1 a litre again?

I remember when they were claiming if it cost more than £4 per gallon to extract, we'd be better off converting it from coal, South Africa-style. Textbooks used to quote CO2 levels as 0.03% and now they say 0.04%.

Better if we stop all this fossil fuel use while we've still got oxygen left.

VW have damaged the reputation of diesel, the planet needs saving, we're looking at the lowest petrol price for a decade and the economy is on the up.

If ever there was a time to turn the screw it's now.

You never really thought the British would be allowed to fill up for less did you?

    It's electric time.
