Frightened

I have spent 20 years with money problems burying my head in the ground. On Monday I had a letter from the police saying there was a warrant out for my arrest due to a parking fine I had completely forgotten about. The letter states I can give myself up and go to the court on Friday where I will be dealt with. I'm so scared I rang the warrant office who said I wouldn't be locked up but I'm so mortified yet again more stress and worry due to not paying my debts. I'm now out of work but have a few interviews lined up so hoping to be earning again soon. My partner works but we are both awful with money and this has been the eye opener I needed to sort it out. Calling step change now!!
Thanks for listening I have never felt so down and scared.

Make sure you go to court and very well done on having the courage to phone and post here.

and also not forgetting to mention when there that your financial position is you are struggling with debt / to pay bills / have very little money spare each month after essentials and request the judge allow you to pay whatever they are after in managable installments.....

    Hi bextas

As the others have said, you’ve definitely done the right thing by facing up to this and seeking advice. The most important thing is to show willingness to pay based on how much you can afford, even if it's only a small amount for now. It’s good idea to prepare a statement of affairs to get an overview of your finances as the court will probably need that information, so take it with you. If you complete one through this link you can post it here to get some advice on it, as it needs to be realistic and sustainable:

  • This can be sorted, I'm sure. Get a rough soa/ budget dome and give national debtline a call. I think they are open until 9pm tonight so its not too late to get it sorted.
I would imagine the courts are not overly keen to lock people up but obviously they have to have a sanction. I would suggest you cooperate fully, be contrite, apologise for the ovesight and come up with a payment you can afford and stick to it. Whilst it may be tempting to promise the world it would probably be better to actually come up with something you can afford rather than promising something and not sticking to it which could cause more trouble.
Don't forget to phone national debtline for advice to get this sorted.
