Employment tribunal versus Small claims court

Just wondering what your thoughts are on this...

solicitor advised to pursue a claim for unpaid wages, unauthorised deduction and not paying national minimum wage through small claims court rather than employment tribunal.

Reason being their defence of leaving without notice and damage to customers land will be considered all the same in either court so may as well go for small claims whom can also enforce employment law but are significantly cheaper to do so.

So are there any benefits going to employment tribunal over simple money claim?

What's the difference in reality between them both? Would the employment tribunals have more specialised knowledge?
Would the employers defence of damage to property be treated differently if unauthorised deduction or treated the same for each?
