moulting brushed cotton sheets

Got some brushed cotton sheets they are lovely and warm but seem to be shedding bits of white fluff all over the place, the bedroom carpet is covered. I washed them before first use. Any ideas how to stop the shedding?

    Hi,

They do at first. We had the same problem. I hope it helps to say that it does stop eventually, and as you have discovered they are very warm and soft and last for years. :D
  • I had this problem, it seemed to stop after a few washes when the fluff turned into tiny hard scratchy lumps . Sorry that's not much help.

Those sheets are now used on top of the duvet to 'catch' the muddy paw prints :(

I wouldn't use fabric conditioner if that's any help! it just makes the fibres 'slippy' and more prone to moult.
and wash them at the highest temperature the washing label says.
they WILL settle down. and be your favourite winter sheets! (I actually use mine during the summer as well as they seem to absorb perspiration better than most sheets).

I have brushed cotton for this time of year, and they have finally stopped shedding five years down the line :)

Brushed cotton is very long fibres and they do take a while to " bed in". Rather like a real wool carpet, seems like there is fluff forever
  • They will shed, but they will stop after a few washes - hot wash and no fabric conditioner helps. After they're dry it also helps if you can 'pull' the sheets before storing. This helps to gently loosen the fibres so that the sheets don't shrink and they stay nice and soft. You need 2 people for this.

One person hold top corners of sheet, the other the bottom corners. Gather the edge between your hands so you're holding two handfuls of material and there's a long strip of bunched up fabric between you and your partner.
Firmly pull the diagonally opposite corners. Let go of the fabric til you're holding the corners again and fold in half length ways. Fold length ways again so you have a long strip of folded fabric. Gently pull again and then fold up the sheet to store.

Hope this makes sense - it's quite hard to write down in words!
Napguard are excellent quality - seem to stop shedding faster if they're good quality. I had my sets as a Christmas present a few years ago. I also have a pair of classic 70s orange Napguard sheets from my folks. They are beautifully soft.

Thanks Allybee, this also explains my incredible shrinking jami's! The tops sometimes go shorter where the bottoms don't go smaller at all. Going to start giving them a good stretch while wet in future, thanks :)
