2023: the year I get to buy a car
  • I was just thinking about how long everything seems the other day when I was looking at the years on my own spreadsheet....

I personally find it very hard to imagine further than a year in advance. I get very, very impatient. I thought I was going to go nuts during the first two weeks of January waiting for my next OP.

However, towards the end of January I was rudely interrupted from my obsessing by work. And then suddenly it was pay day again!

I think the key is to try and not think about it all too much. Once the budgets are set there isn't much more that can be done about that month.

I've decided that this month I am limiting how much time I spend with my beloved spreadsheets. I'm going to update the months figures if I need to and then I'm going to close it. I am going to try and remember that no matter how much I stare at the sheet, x years is never going to magically reduce to x-y years....

I'll let you know how that goes :)
  • , I keep staring and wishing , when the thing I need to change is time :(
Thankfully , I currently have a few different pots to pull from to keep interest up. x

I'm feeling exactly the same. I too get impatient with the time stretching ahead of me. I just want to make all these payments and get it done. Grr.
Which is why I'm going to try and break mine down into mini goals.
Also, can someone explain to me what Tilly Tidying is? I keep hearing it on the MFW board, but I'm not actually sure what it is.
    Thanks

Morning, Tilly Tidying started because I used to OP any pennies in our accounts to the mortgage. Anything to feel that I was doing something daily to move us towards our goal. I can't remember who coined the phrase Tilly Tidying but it has taken off over the last few years.

I used to OP around £45 a month by doing that.

The period between being paid and making a large OP, then waiting to be paid again was too deflating for me, hence moving pennies.

I promise it works and keeps the momentum up. I was never concerned about the length of my mortgage statement but I know others are. The money can be moved into a holding account and OPd when ready which keeps the statement shorter :rotfl:

OK have been pondering the motivation issue this morning as it can be hard if you have to go a few weeks without OP'ing

    So here are my options

    1. I focus on the amount of interest I have saved, aiming for £100 targets at a time

    2. I focus on the amount of overpayments I have made, aiming £500 at a time

    3. I focus on my remaining mortgage balance, aiming for the next £500 lower at a time

No 2 is covered by the challenges and I feel I need something extra to keep me going ;)

No 3 would be an estimate as I don't have online access and statement is only once a year :(

No 1 seems the best option (only because I want to use the OP calculator :D).......................or do you have any better ideas ???

When does your current mortgage deal end? You could also think about LTV brackets. Or to go with interest saved whilst you're using the OP calculator you could monitor the months knocked off the term. I kilowatt that for every £450 OP's it knocks 1 month off the term for example.
