Credit cards when applying for loan

Hello. My car has almost died and I'm looking to take out a loan between 6k and 7.5k.
I have 3 credit cards, Santander 123 that I use regularly, (£2800) a Halifax one I use mostly only when I'm abroad (£2200) and a Lloyds duo that I haven't used for 6 months or so.(£1250, Stopped when I got the Santander)
Will this impact my application, should I cancel my Lloyds one? I've had really good credit history over the past 3-4 years..

You're already using over £6k of credit. What's the available credit on each of the cards? And what's your salary?

In what way has it almost died ?

Have you looked into getting it fixed ?
  • The available credit is in brackets next to the card. I owe nothing on any of them . I know I have over 6k in total but if I used them to buy a car the interest rates would be lots more than getting a, say for example 4% Apr loan. The car I have is worth £500 and it needs over £800 in repairs....

Ah, I see. I thought those were the balances.

If you spend £800 repairing it, how long do you think it will last? You'll pay far more than £800 on a loan over a year.

  • I want to get something bigger and economical. Its a 2litre coupe so even if I got it fixed I would be wanting to get rid soon anyway. And saying its worth £500 is honestly being generous. I can afford monthly payments for a loan so that's not a problem. Just concerned about having unused credit available when applying

If you can afford monthly payments for a loan, then presumably you have savings. How much do you have?

I have been there years ago , your car plays up , you end up almost wanting it to , so that you can go out and splurge on a `new` one

    I learnt the hard way

In your shoes , use savings to get yourself a good runaround or fix the current car , never take on debt if you dont have to
Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.

Spend a thousand pounds on a car and put what you would have paid in loan repayments into a savings account.
