dried peas, contains 'steeping tablet' anyone know what this is?

I am into sprouting seeds and beans at the mo so I bought some dried peas form Asda, 21p per box intending to sprout them. It says on the box that there is a steeping tablet inside and a net bag.

The tablet is made up of sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate and acid sodium pyrophosphate.

I don't fancy putting this near my food and wondered if I could use it to soak my whites along with white vinegar? Does anyone out there know? many thanks DH

You'll have eaten those compounds many times in everyday foods. They're harmless.

I have memories of my Grandma reading this thead. She always had a bowl of peas steeping on the kitchen bench :D
Here I go again on my own....

How on earth will you sprout dried peas? Sprouting is not something I've ever tried and I'm intrigued?

    sodium carbonate

Although this is often used for washing soda, there is a culinary version often found in sherbet sweets - it gives them that fizz. And used in some "instant" foods, like those flavoured noodle thingies :D
    sodium bicarbonate

    baking soda or bicarb
    acid sodium pyrophosphate

used in food, but also an ingredient in toothpaste!

    :D

    Hi Bobbykins,

I've been sprouting things for a while now, as far as I know the only seeds you can't sprout are potato and tomato as they are toxic. I've done alfalfa, aduki, mung, chick peas, sunflower seeds and lentils (green and red).

I got a book out of the library (sad I know...) and it said you can sprout dried peas and they taste just like fresh peas. I thought it would make a nice change.

The book was interesting though, they talk about making milk out of sprouted almonds, not tried this though...

Its ever so cheap and very good for you, the kids like all the sprouted things as a snack instead of crisps/ salted peanuts etc which I never buy.

Anyhoo, I'm going to try the steeping tablet in the washing and use the net bag for my sprouter! ;)
