Wood Pellets

I know that not a lot people here jumped on the biomass bandwagon but anyone who did, where do you get your pellets?? I know of Brites from Balcas and I know Carlisle are reasonable. But are there any other suppliers for NI that are flying under the radar?
I was actually able to buy pellets out of England cheaper than the above mentioned 2 companies, even taking delivery into consideration
I started out with nothing......And still have most of it left:p

We did use Brites but their pellets were quite soft and clogged our auger (we get them blown into a 8 tonne bin from a lorry, so not bagged), so we switched to Carlisle.

Have had no problems with their pellets and they've been much nicer to deal with.

Having said that, oil is significantly cheaper than the pellets at the moment, so we're predominantly running oil.

I was considering buying a small silo but the cost per tonne couldnt really justify it for me so I'm sticking with bags. Yes you're right that oil is so much cheaper but I removed my oil boiler and as I'm getting the grant (RHI payments) for the pellets(free) I'm not too concerned

We got the silo because of our usage primarily. Its a 4,000 sq/ft house so we didnt want to be loading it with bags of pellets frequently, also didnt want to be managing several pallet loads of the things at a time and thus taking up horizontal floor space (as opposed to vertical space in the silo)

Yes, good job RE: getting the RHI payments , our install pre-dated it.

Hi CEON44, could you tell me what company in England you used to get the bagged pellets cheaper?

I have used both Carlisle and Brites before. Carlisle seem to be marginally cheaper but we had too many delivery and invoicing issues with them, so switched to Brites. Haven't noticed any difference in the quality of the pellets.

I bought from this company. They have 975kg for £199 plus £20 per pallet delivery. I've tried a couple of their different pellet options and they seem fine. They are top graded pellets. Delivery was quicker then I thought, about 3 days after ordering and they came to me through a local courier undamaged. Your'e not saving a total fortune but it all adds up

    Thanks CEON44. Every pound's a prisoner!!!!.

It seems about £25 cheaper than the last pallet bought from Brites, if you go for the cheaper pellets. But just trying to work out the difference between the pellets at £199 and those at £219. They both seems to be EN+A1 certified. Have you tried both? Did you notice any difference?

They just seem to change around the ones that are £199. So if you check next week you will maybe see that different types are dearer/cheaper. As a matter of fact yesterday on the website 4 types were 199 and just 1 was 219. today its the opposite, 4 at 219 and 1 at 199. Dont know why they jump around so much. I've used both Granulata and KG and both are fine

Should have mentioned that they dont do minimum orders, so you can buy just 1 pallet to try them out

  • i have no idea what your pricings work out per bag but i do know that some horse owners are using pellets for bedding. might be worth contacting any local farm supply shop in case there might be a deal available. i've been told they are the same pellets that are used in home heating.
