knee pain while driving.

Hi all need a bit of advice:

I've got a 700 odd mile round trip van journey to make next week.

In the past always get a sore knee while driving cars longer than a few hours, (Long legs, small cars!). I know it's to do with the position I'm stuck in while driving.

Is their any way I can brace or support my knee while driving? Not sure what the Van i'll be getting will be like so I might need something to support my knee for the journey!

Looking on Amazon at the range of knee supports, not sure If I need a massive contraption strapped over my knee or I could get away with just some sports strapping!

any help / advice welcomed! ^_^

    Which leg?

A bit late now, but I have a similar issue, I had physio and my task was to do a certain exercise whenever I was sat, basically I had a very small foot ball, heel on the floor and pushing down for thirty seconds at a time, a bit like accelerating. This really helped, I can only drive vehicles where I van have my knees straight (rather than pointing out) otherwise it is very painful.

    It's my right knee mostly.
    Not driven for ages.

Always had problems with weak knees, physio never seemed to help much.
Planning on taking my time as much as I can and resting my legs every few 100 miles or so.

I'm interested to follow this thread as I have the same problem. I drive an automatic car and I also have the pain in my right knee. Physio told me it was because I was drawing my knee upwards when I am driving especially when changing from brake to accelerator and vice versa. She told me that I need to try really hard not to draw/hold my knee upwards when driving and that the stiffness in my ankle means I find it harder to move just my foot a cross, I'm moving the whole leg instead and lifting it up and across. She said this is the result of weakness in that ankle and that I need to get that ankle loosened up but also stronger so that its freer and I will start using my ankle more instead of doing everything "from the knee" when I'm driving. She said to practise doing little exercises like moving my foot up and down, ankle side to side etc. Its helped a little but I still get pain especially on longer journeys and I do have to think really hard about what I'm doing with my leg when I'm driving and try to think of relaxing my knee. I dread being in slow moving traffic where I'm on and off the brake, my knee always starts to ache. It gets a lot worse too if I'm sat too close to the steering wheel as it makes my knee tighter. If anyone else drives my car and moves my seat I find it a nightmare to get back to a comfortable seating position.
