I've always liked EMpire. Medieval 2 is pretty good as well.

I think it depends what you like.

Rome 2 and Atilla are great if you like mostly mellee combat, both disciplined and a little more "ad hoc" respectively, and Warhammer looks good if you're into the fantasy stuff...

Personally I prefer Empire/Napoleon, as they feel a little more tactical to me - not just "Who gets the best hammer+anvil cavalry charge?", and I love the Empire style of worldwide gameplay, even if the combat is a little better in Napoleon.

The one set in Japan was very good. The Napoleon one felt very clumsy after it.

Nothing beats the first Rome: Total War even though it is old as stone. I wasn't a huge fan of Rome 2. Shogun 2 is very good though, better than Empire in my opinion.

I've not played Napoleon, Attila or Medieval yet.

Always loved the original Medieval Total War with the Viking expansion, looks dated now but awesome game play.
