My understanding is that a UC claim is kept open for administrative purposes for 6 months after you earn enough to stop receiving any benefit but if you aren't actually receiving any UC once you start earning then you don't need to do anything to increase your hours.

  • If you are looking after a disabled parent can you get carers allowance or something whilst working part time?

I don't go out of my way to care for him in any official capacity, he has health issues that prevent him from working but he's quite independent around the house.

It sounds like you are about to free yourself from the whole benefits thing and soar free and become an independent person working where when and for how long you choose rather than have this dictated by someone else. With any luck you may not even ever have to post again on this depressing benefits board. You can do some work from home if the mood takes you in addition to your 16 hours or work more hours if you get to like that job or you can earn money some other way in addition to the 16 hours if that takes your fancy at some future time without having to worry about how your choices affect benefits. In fact you can get on with your life without having to look over your shoulder all the time. Freedom. I hope you have every success.
