How far back can you claim tax on savings interest?

I am in my 60's and am embarrassed to admit that I've always thought everyone had to pay tax on savings and a personal allowance was for "earnings" i.e. for people who earned a wage! Therefore, I've pad quite a lot of tax I didn't need too. My question is, how far back can I claim?

No need to be embarrassed. I can't find anything definitive with a quick search but I would think you could claim back at least the last 4 years.0

How to claim
Fill in form R40 and send it to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). It normally takes 6 weeks to get the tax back.
You must reclaim your tax within 4 years of the end of the relevant tax year.0
