Can you swim too much?

In the summer the open air pools are 50m.
So frustrating only having an indoor 25 m pool.0 -
it depends on the kind on stroke, the amount of time doing it, e.t.c
just like you can get ailments walking, you can do the same with swimming even though it's low bearing.
I would recommend a sauna after to loosen any tension.
I've had to make sure I go twice a week since upping my regime. as I tend to seize quickly, to the point of back to back injury.0 -
80 lengths a day sounds too much to me.

Maybe it is too much,but I have oodles of free time,it gives my day structure,it relaxes me no end and I think that it's my main 'pleasure' of the day.I'd rather do two shorter sessions,cause one long one would be too tiring.
I'm playing it by ear though.Some days I only go once.0 -

I doubt your suffering from any of the symptoms.
80 lengths is fine. I would not worry about it being overtraining or over doing it.

What about if you swim every day?
I've recently started swimming every day and do 60-80 lengths a day.
I can't see that it would cause muscle damage in the same way that running would....am I right?

hi,
I learnt to swim crawl stroke some 25 years ago after a car ran me over on my bicycle from the rear at 60 mph leaving me for dead (nearly). i have continued to swim since that day, including being lowered in to the hydrotherapy pool on a hydraulic lift for a long rehabilitation. which was the start of my long swimming life , which i have endured ever since.
I found out that doing the continous breast stroke was very painful for the neck region etc, so i had also had to learn how to do the front crawl.
For most of the last 25 years i have swam the crawl stroke and i do 64 lengths every day i get in the pool, i did have 2 enforced rests for 2 shoulder operations (cuff rotation surgery) , not caused by swimming, also , over that period of time my diagphram on my left hand side had become paralised . so yes i have been through the washer, during this long period of swimming i used to cover the mile swim in 27 minutes , i am now looking at 34 minutes at a leisurely pace & i am now not a spring chicken anymore.
Im giving you a very short version of my lifetime events, as for your question , you should feel free and relaxed after your swim, if not you need to mix your swimming strokes and concentrate on your general fitness & take advice from your local swim coach,0 -
Swimming is to move your body in a pattern, like walking. How much you can swim is up to how much your body get used to it. I've once heard professional swimmer swim 12 hour daily. But if you're not that used to swimming you should test for your limit(consider your own safety also).0
