Bizarre Self Assessment - Please Help!

Hi

I have just filled out my self assessment online, as I have done for some years now.

However, something really does not appear right. This year I was not asked if I made any profit or loss!? Not a single question relating to the profitability of my self employment!

What's more I managed to complete the whole thing in under 2 hours, and at the end it says they owe me £1464.

Yes, the above sounds like a dream come true, but it just does not seem right to me.

Any idea why they didn't even ask anything with regards to profit/loss for my self employment?

Have they introduced some super clever software that magically predicts my profit/loss? Have the rules changed or something?

Thanks

Well, at the beginning you are asked if you have any income from self employment, as part of the section which determines which Tax return pages you are asked to fill in, and which are skipped as they do not apply to you.

Perhaps you said at this point that you had no self employment income - so it won't ask you!
If so - then I'd go back and edit your replies in the very first section and then it will ask you for all your self employment figures as usual. (I suspect now having gone past it that you will have to click on the S.E section manually).

Will double check. I am sure that must be the issue...

EDIT - I messed up on the first screen, and accidentally set self-employment to 'no.'

    Thanks

So much easier to do it the old fashioned way and file a paper tax return.

But I wonder how much longer HMRC will give us that option?

I prefer the online version - links to guidance notes and worksheets are very helpful. It's a LOT easier to use than it was when online first came out and was just an electronic version of the paper form. And submitting online gives me longer to get round to it as well as a chance to amend the details if (like this time) I find another piece of paper and realise I've missed something out..
  • Hi

Sorry to ask a question with a question but this is the first time I've visited this site and want to find out how I can create a question of my own (it does relate to Self assessment) but can't see where to create a new question

I have simply registered to the site and not paid any subscription so that may be why I can't see a button allowing me to create a forum/ask a question.

You need to use the breadcrumb menu at the top of this page, and navigate your way to the page 'cutting tax.'

From there you hit the button 'new thread' at the top left of page.

You don't need to pay any subscription fees.
