Sainsbury's wont release my pac code without ID?

I have a PAYG account with Sainsburys and as some may know, they are shutting down in Jan.

I called up this morning to request my code and was told I had to email a copy of my photo id and sim serial number before they did it. Apparently I have what is considered a "desirable" number. (its not that desirable at all btw)

Is this even legal? Considering I am a PAYG customer anyway, I doubt they even have any of my details anyway.

FYI I originally PACed the number over from Vodafone about a year ago.

Any help appreciated.

They can withold the PAC if they are not satisfied you are the genuine account holder, but if they currently hold none of your details then I'm not sure how you sending them ID is going to assist them.

Surely something more straightforward would be 'when was the last time you topped up?', or 'how often and how much have you topped up in the last month?'.
