Help to buy ISA problem

Hi 1st post
Ive had some debt problems in the past (Online Gambling) I am almost at the point now where my credit file is starting to get better with some of my defaults dropping off after the 6 years since default.
My question is I am now ready to start saving for my first home and want to open a help to buy ISA with Halifax 4% however I had a student overdraft with them a few years back and i am unsure if I paid it back in full or not (Life was in a bit of turmoil at the time)
Is it wise to apply to open a help to buy ISA with them?? Could it re start the process?? Could they take my money??
Cheers
