Sabbatical

I often read people getting 1-2 years unpaid leave from their employer to travel the world etc and there is guaranteed job whenever they decide to return. Is this something that employers offer here in UK? Are there any risks? Could I take that unpaid leave and work at the same time for another employer? thanks!

It might not work if working for another employer in the uk but you might be able to abroad. I'm going on a casual contract when I return from travelling

It depends on the company. Read their policy on such matters.

I was lucky enough to keep my job while I went travelling for a year. I returned to the same job I was in previously (it was a good role) and kept my length of service for things like redundancy and employee perks. I won't lie, it was great knowing I had a job to come back to and took a certain amount of pressure off. Only real disadvantage is that you have to be back by a certain date rather than have the option to extend your trip.

It depends on your company's policy.

With my company for example it is possible to take up to a year off, though if you take 3 months or more they can move you to a different role when you get back.

If your company announces redundancies while you're away they may make you redundant too if you're not there to defend your position.

Working for a different company isn't really what sabbaticals are for but if they don't find out what's the harm? If you work for a competitor they might not be too happy about it though.

Why don't you just use the £150K that you have to invest to pay for your time off? Or have you already spent it on a bridge to live under?

    Or the hair transplant :D

Sabbaticals are generally offered after a certain length of service, and usually stipulate that you cannot work elsewhere.
