Can anyone please advise me , just got back from the Opticians and was told that I am slightly long sighted .
the readings are
Right SPH -0.25 CYL - 0.50 AXIS 85
Left SPH -0.00 CYL - 0.50 Axis 106.0 Left Dist .50 O
I do a lot of drivng and since the clocks have gone back I have
noticed that focusing in things ahead of me aswell as in my mirrors have become quite hard .
Also working on at a computer I suffer from quite a bit of eye fatigue / straing .
When buying the glasses would paying for Anti Reflection Coating.
ANy help or advice would be much appreciated .

I need glasses, as I am short sighted in both eyes, but have the anti glare coating for cosmetic reasons (reduces the effect of white rings around very concave prescription ) . However, it does also help when driving at night.
Did your optician not discuss whether you need glasses ?0 -
Hi , thanks for responding .
They said the precription was "very small " and would only really be needed for driving at night but the cheapest pair they had was £80 with the coating which seems quite expensive .
I have seen cheaper pairs online but they did not provide me with the PD reading .
I am not too sure if they were just trying to get a sale out of me .0 -
Did they tell you your VA or can you remember if you could see more letters on the chart or if the chart seemed clearer with the glasses on?
That prescription is very small but to some people it wouldn't make a difference and to others it would make some things clearer.
One thing to note is that anti-glare coating is actually to reduce glare from a lens. When you have an uncoated lens in front of your eye only 90% of light will get through and the rest will deflect off the lens and cause glare. With a coated lens 99% of the light will go through so there will be less glare on the lens. The coating wont reduce glare that's not caused by the lens.0 -
There was only a slight difference when reading the chart with the glasses on ( just the last row ) .
I have not really got issues with my vision but do struggle with the headlights from other car whilst driving in the dark which is why they suggested the anti glare .
Thanks for your responses it is much appreciated0 -
The bottom line of most eye charts is usually better than 6/6 or 20/20 vision so I wouldn't be concerned about your general vision if you just need a wee boost to see the bottom, was it really clearer or was it just smaller and darker?
In terms of help with lights coming towards you unfortunately the treatment on a lens wont help with this, unless you were wearing glasses already and that's what was causing the problem.
Previously some opticians would prescribe a driving lens which is slightly tinted to help with glare at night but it's not really recommended now due to EU rules changing things about and the fact that it's not good to drive in the dark with darkened glasses on.
To give you an idea of how small this prescription is, you couldn't get off the shelf contact lenses in these powers.
This is going to sound a bit mad but if the glare could be getting caused by light bouncing off your windscreen so making sure that's streak free and not got any fine scratches in your direct line of vision might help better than any glasses would.0 -
I would definetly give the windscreen a good clean first
Some people go more myopic at night so suffer with night driving so it is possible this rx would help. I would over minus it personally and give you an extra -0.25.
I would not bother with 95% of people but around 5% would benefit it is hard to tell without trying it.
as a general rule people who would normally benefit are thoose who are precise types who want things to be 100% who can really tell the differnce between HD and normal TV etc. If it would bother you that your vision is only 90% rather than 100% then may be worth a try.
Incidently with the prescription PD will make no diffrence at all to induced prism0 -
totally an optom to optom (or are you a DO?) but over minus is interesting. Have you ever had these Pxs return with headaches because they get a bit "correction happy" and over wear the glasses? I hate that myopes love their prescriptions so much, you recommend glasses for a specific task like golf and 2 years later they come back and they're in them full time. I know it's not a big deal but then they want more minus to get back to 6/30

I spent yesterday afternoon cleaning my car windows ( inside and out ) including the side mirrors and to my shame it has made a big difference to the glare .
I never noticed the issue until the clocks went back and I had to drive back home on the A45 from Coventry to Birmingham where there are no street lights due to the airport .
In a panic I seen a free eye test while shopping ( tescos ) and jumped into it without thinking that it could be the windows causing the issue.
Thanks to everyone for taking the time out to repsond , not only has it saved me some money but also the worry about getting some glasses0 -
It's a simple trick and glad it worked for you0

I am an optom. I am a -10 myope myself.
I have px who swear by their on paper daft prescriptions of -0.50 or whatever. I am happy with them wearing them full time if they want - never seems to cause them any bother.0
