I recently treated myself to a memory foam pillow from John Lewis....I was all excited and couldn't wait to sleep on it.
It's OK, but no where near as good as I was expecting so won't be rushing out to buy a memory foam mattress or topper! My second favorite household chore is ironing. My first being, hitting my head on the top bunk bed until I faint.-Erma Bombeck-~ Member of the MSE Celebdaq Minileague ~0 -
I bought a memory foam mattress about 18 months ago and thought it was a little uncomfortable but after a month it bedded in (pardon the pun) and it is fantastic.0

I've had my memory foam mattress for many years and I wouldn't swap it for anything.
Have a look at this merged thread for lots of posts on this subject:

I bought one from Netto earlier on this year around £49.00, best bargain I have found so keep your eye on Netto's special offers they usually come round again.0

I think your friend didn't quite understand about memory foam mattresses. Memory foam doesn't have any bounce in it at all, it is a slow reacting foam. For this reason the memory foam is just the top layer of and memory foam mattress, with a layer of either reflex foam, open coil springs, or pocket springs underneath. By far the best option for back support is pocket sprung/memory foam (before the usual people start slating me for saying that, I sell all 3 types). Also the sprung/memory foam types give better ventilation, so don't tend to cause the overheating problem often associated with memory foam mattresses.
The memory foam layer should be between 2" and 2 1/2" deep. Less than this and it won't contour to your body. More than this and it will engulf you and make you too hot, and also make it difficult to change position.
The density of the memory foam should be between 55kg per m3 and 67 kg per m3.
As for Ikea mattresses......stay away from them.0 -

You can find some really good bargains for beds on ebay.
I know that many people are very wary about buying items like beds from ebay. However if you follow a few guidelines then you can save up to 75% on the shop prices:
1) most important of all make sure that the seller gives a 100% satisfaction guarantee.
2) check previous feedback for the seller, and even contact previous customers to ask them about the seller.
3) use a company who display their phone number, so that you can talk to someone about your requirements (they want you to make the righ choice because it will cost them if you return it).
4) check the sellers return policy. Many sellers charge for postage on returns.....can work out very expensive if you have unpacked a vacuum packed mattress, and you don't like it.
5) try to use a seller who delivers using their own transport. Couriers often damage or misplace goods (believe me I know from experience).
Obviously you can't try before you buy, but for the saving it is worth the risk if you follow the guidelines above.
