Debt collector 3 years after leaving Plusnet

Hi,

I had a Plusnet account for broadband between 2011 and 2012. I cancelled the service when I moved out of the flat I was renting and thought nothing more about it.

Today, 3 years after cancelling, I've had a call from Zinc Group debt collectors. They wouldn't tell me what the call was about because I couldn't remember the address of my flat and hence couldn't pass security. However a quick Google of the number they called on revealed who they are and what they will likely want.

I've had no communication from Plusnet about a debt owed on the account, no forwarded mail and no email communication whatsoever. Given it's over 3 years since I had the account it seems strange that they're now chasing me for something.

A search of Zinc Group also reveals that they're not exactly the most reputable company. They don't have my current address and I'm not giving them any more information. Should I just ignore them ?

  • Block the number, and forget the call.

If it's important, then they'll trace you.

    Hi DE018, welcome to MSE.

Creditors have 6 years to chase you through the county court system for a debt like this (so they are able to chase you after 3 years). They should write to you with more information so without a letter there is probably no need to worry.

But if you are concerned you can get in touch with PlusNet and ask them if there was any debt owing from this account. If there wasn't then you can put your mind at rest about this phone call (which could be a case of mistaken identity, something to do with another debt or possibly a scam - I think you are right not to offer any more personal details over the phone to them).

If they confirm money was owed then you should try and find out why, how much and take further advice from there. Hope that helps.

A quick call to plusnet will answer the question as to wether you still owe them any money, you normally have to give 30 days notice to end a contract, after which there will be a final bill, could be you either weren't aware of that, or it slipped your mind, or it may be a mistake on there part, only way to resolve it quickly is to get on the blower.

  • I phoned Plusnet yesterday. Apparently when I cancelled the contract overran the billing period by 4 days so I had that amount still owing. Quite why they left it 3 years and didn't contact me by email or the phone number they obviously had is up for discussion but at least it's paid now. Thanks for all the replies.
