Finding a reasonably priced tutor for 10 year old in the Sydenham area

Hi All,

I'm trying to find a reasonably priced tutor for Maths and English for my 10 year son, ideally under £30 per lesson. I'd like to do 2 hours a week, I know it's not a great deal but that's what my budget will alllow for at the moment.

My son is below year 6 standards overall, so I'm not expecting miracles but I'd like some steady progress.

I live within the Sydenham area.

I'd appreciate if you guys could give me some advice with finding a good tutor.

I have done a Google search and found this: http://www.thetutorpages.com/maths-tutors and this: http://www.tutorhunt.com/ You would have to interview and vet the tutors yourself.

Why not speak to the tutors and your sons school. Maybe they could provide extra tuition? They may know someone local?

There might be booster classes in school or ask the teacher/ head if they know of anyone. Other thing is possibly ask a supply agency as they might know of local people. But in all honestly unless it's for the 11 plus or something it might not be worth it as the sats only show where they are at the moment and don't really count for a lot. They give the senior school an idea of your child's attainment but even so they might go there and flourish under different teachers and the like

A suitably motivated sixth former might give it a go (say one interested in going into teaching), but obviously they'd not have much experience. Is he just below standards, no particular learning difficulties? That would make an inexperienced tutor less advisable. I'd definitely speak to your son's school first - they ought to be able to advise on what is/isn't appropriate. I did do some tutoring when I was a sixth former, but that was for GCSE students. I'm not sure I would've been comfortable with such a young student. Tutoring can be intense, on both sides!
