Keeping toilets unblocked

Hi, I'm new to the forum, so Hi!
A quick question, our toilet has a habit of blocking and I wondered if there's any way to keep it clear, anything I can put down it like with drains?
Many thanks

    :) In short, no.

Do you know what is causing the blockages?

Common causes are premium brands of loo roll (as told to me by the water company) or ladies' sanitary products. If you live in a hardwater area and the soil pipe has been in situ for decades, it is perfectly possible that the diameter or the pipe has been substantially constricted by limescale build up.

My Nan's 1947- built bungalow had the waste pipe contricted by about 50% by the 1990s when it was eventually changed. HTH.

  • Eurgh! I'll keep the plunger handy as can't do anything with the pipes etc. I'll try switching loo paper and see if that helps. Thank you.

This is a horrible problem I encountered a while ago, and looked to Youtube for an answer.
    1) washing up liquid - didn't work
    2) bent coat hanger - diidn't work
    3) finally found a hardware store and bought a plunger: instant relief!

I thought all loo paper was designed to dissolve in water - are there some brands that don't?

I know putting baby wipes down the toilet often causes blockages.

I was under the same impression until v recently. According to a post on the forum, the issue is the quantity used.

It never occurred to me that the waste pipe could get furred up. Sounds logical though. Maybe a weekly dose with Harpic Limescale remover will keep that problem at bay.
  • Not just babywipes but flushing anything that isn't TP can cause a blockage. We had this when there was someone next door who flushed facewipes down the loo and raw sewage started coming out of our drain (joint system apparently). Guy who came to unblock it told us that this often happens when people flush the wrong stuff...

Give it out to him one square at a time - in advance! ;)
