    Londoner born and bred

Moved to Surrey when London started getting expensive

Moved to Northern Ireland when Surrey started getting expensive

Now we are mortgage free, have a huge detached house, neighbours are sheep and cows and we both work in low paid jobs without any commuting, and fly to London a few times a year to see family and friends

    Best move we ever made

I took to country living like a duck to water

Sometimes I get homesick but two days in London soon cures me of that :)

Don't get me wrong, I think London is a fantastic city, the best in the world, but I could no longer live on the treadmill that it is

We moved out of London to Surrey too, when we both retire we may also move to another area (up-sizing in quality, space and value). I have never regretted, even momentarily moving out of London (although I'm from Newcastle originally, so I don't have particularly strong personal ties to London).

Each to their own I say.
Those of you who love where you are have clearly stated that there are what some would consider to be downsides e.g. Low incomes, poor choice of jobs, climate etc.
This may be ok once once you've made some money and want to slow down, but anyone wanting to get ahead in their career cannot be in the middle of nowhere.
I personally feel the cold and if I was going to love it would be to somewhere warmer not somewhere colder despite whatever upsides there are, so each to their own.
  • Why bother working to fund expensive London property when you could just sell up and retire up north or on Wales or northern Ireland, or abroad?

Your posts are utter nonsense do you know that ?
Someone is wealthy and living in a expensive home and they better give it up so poor hard done by Mathew can gain the home that the owner has loved, cherished and worked hard for.

I think you must have came in from planet Mars with the silly thoughts you have daily.

Maybe a bit harsh, but are there loads of people out there who don't realise their options until they receive matthew's wisdom? Doubt it.

Its worth a try isn't it? I have nothing to lose by posting ideas, it won't please everyone but it may appeal to some, and this isn't against the wealthy at all, they could benefit from the move if its right for them. If its not right for you then you're free to ignore it, I'm not doing anybody harm.

Is the weaker jobs market elsewhere (and lack of an oligarch effect) that makes housing elsewhere cheaper, so its more compelling for early retirees to move if they choose

I live away from London but not up north, so there are more temperature friendly areas, or abroad is an option

I doubt it too. Is MA after a cheap pad in London or just generally commenting? I'm not au fait with the poster's MO.

It doesn't seem unreasonable to me to sell up in London at a certain price and buy somewhere else to have a better lifestyle. After all, if prices stayed the same everywhere that was Not London and owned in London there would be a price at which I would sell, even if that price was such that I could recreate London on the Isle of Wight.

If everyone really knew all their options without ideas being presented, you wouldn't see people make debt mistakes, you wouldn't have silly dictators and terrorists, and you wouldn't even need forums

General - I wouldn't consider London really, but London has an effect that I don't want in the town I live, it'd be good to ease that pressure
    And good for humanity generally
