Opening a second business - VAT related

Hi there. I've had a small residential gardening business for the past 4 years. As time has progressed I've picked up bigger commercial contracts and currently running close to the VAT limit.
My question is would it be possible to split the business and have one purely for residential gardening and one purely for commercial gardening to avoid having to go VAT registered over time?
