    "Volunteering" should be voluntary.

Nobody in that sector should use that term if they take forced labour.

There are stories here, there & everywhere, they are all individuals and should be considered as such.

Would all "pensioners" be same as your hubby, I don't think so, more problems of different kind. ;)

Actually yes a lot are, I have 6 pensioners like my hubby in my shop he also volunteers in a museum with 15 other volunteers during the week , all pensioners

    Very good.

I "heard stories" that pensioners in charity shops aren't always the best, as they can come & go, see it as a social thing, doing what they want. ;)

But maybe your little biased as involves hubby.

Then the stories are wrong, I have dedicated and committed elderly and pensioner volunteers not only do they come in when they say they will and do a very good job but will often do extra days and hours when needed,. For instance one of my volunteers is moving into a warden controlled flat and needs a couple of weeks off to move, before I even had the chance to ASK the others if they could cover they had worked it out amongst themselves who would cover the extra days and hours and gave me a list of who would be in and when.

As for the social thing, yes there is that and why not???? but the fact remains is that 1000s of pensioners volunteer not just because of that but because the charity is dear to their heart, like volunteering for a cancer or heart charity because their spouses may have died from one of these and they want to help raise funds for research, I volunteered for a heart disease charity and that was the main reason for pensioners volunteering for that charity.

They certainly without doubt are the best I have NEVER been let down by any of my pensioner volunteers they are the backbone of my shop and without them I couldn't raise the money I do for a very very worthwhile cause.
