pay slips

Apologies if this is in the wrong place
I have my own business, just myself but am going to employ my son when he's home from Uni,he's basically going to do my job so I can have a break. I don't want to spend a fortune on payroll software, but he obviously will need a payslip. Any ideas please on either free or cheap way to go about this. He will be working for me maybe 4 months out of 12. TIA

Typed on computer/Handwritten? As long as you supply a payslip that would be fine, obviously keep a copy yourself and find out from HMRC how you can pay any necessary tax and NI.

Would an email be acceptable, if all required info?

Can then keep an audit trail, if needed by tax bods too!

  • Payslips themselves can be handwritten, but unless you qualify for exemption (eg "you’re prevented from using a computer on religious grounds") you have to use online real-time reporting of PAYE to HMRC.

HMRC suggests some free payroll software providers. I think Payroo works online and doesn't need anything installed.

HMRC's own basic software doesn't provide payslips but provides the basic tax and NI deduction and reporting tools.

PS Don't forget you'll need employer's liability insurance now you have an employee.
