Have you got a smart meter? Well look out

  • I was told by my broadband provider that the more devices connected to your internet, the slower the connection. As ours is already too slow, I refuse to get a smart meter. I constantly get letters and emails about them supposedly phasing them out, but I ignore them.

Mr LW and I don't want a smart meter, and will resist any efforts to force one on us. I saw in the paper recently that the take-up rate for smart meters is a lot less than the Government were hoping for.

  • This is one of the questions I will be asking when I come to buy a house, I will not have a smart meter and either they get it replaced by an analogue non-communicating meter or I will walk away, I feel so strongly about this. It will be a deal breaker for me

A few months ago we were contacted by our energy provider who wanted to make an appointment to fit a smart meter. According to them, we had asked to be put on their list for one. Mmm, I may not be a spring chicken anymore, but I'm not in my dotage yet and certainly don't remember ever having asked for one.

When I said we didn't want one, the lady seemed surprised and asked why not. Reasons: safety issues with installation, we send you our readings online every month without fail (so no guesstimates) and, at our age, we're well used to conserving energy in order to avoid large bills. So no, we won't be having one, thank you.

Gawd help us if it does become compulsory. It could happen, given the low take-up rate.

My landlord arranged to have SMs fitted in place of the old gas and electricity meters - and it was fine while I was still on the british gas collective fix. The readings were automatically sent and it saved me a job every month.

Now I've switched providers the smart meter has become a 'dumb' meter - but it's a pest because the digital display on the new meters is much harder to read.

The meters are both high up in the entry hall and I used to be able to take a picture on my phone and zoom in to read the numbers when I was back at my computer - Now I have to perch on a chair to press buttons first.

I don't buy in to all of the conspiracy around the technology, but do think they really need to figure out transferring meters between providers.
That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.

We have too much wireless technology as it is, I don't want any more. Just like the self-service tills in supermarkets, these things are putting people out of a job. Blow that, there's no way I'll agree to have one.

I think Kittie that all you have to do is change provider and then you would need a new meter which you can refuse.

  • By the way and slightly ot I was asked for an online meter reading by my supplier GB Energy (went belly up but Coop Energy took them over and retained the name) which I duly gave and have consistently in the past to the day required. This morning I got a bill with a 'read' amount and I am hundreds of pounds in credit, unsurprisingly as I told them exactly what my previous year's use had been but they still insisted on taking an inflated amount.

This evening a meter reader rolls up. What the hell is the point in my sending off readings at their behest when I am clearly not believed? I did just wonder, suspicious old me, whether they are creating a bit of aggro here so that customers willingly accept the smart meters to avoid all this.....
