Seasonal position at Asda, but not being given my contracted hours.

I will apologise now if this goes on a bit, just really need some advice. I started working for Asda on 1/10/15 At the magic session we were told we'd be permanent, again at the best welcome we were told we were permanent, however, when we received the letters offering us the role these stated we were seasonal, but would be contracted to at least 8 hours a week, with the option of as much overtime as we wanted.
I had a phone call from one of the managers today telling me that they have been told that they can have no seasonal staff in at all this week, not even for our contracted hours.
This leaves me in a terrible position a month before Christmas with a house to run and a family to support. Can I do anything, or do I just have to accept this? Feel really let down and upset at mo.
Thanks in advance if you do have any advice to offer me.

Well, it sounds like breach of contract, but as it's ASDA (aka WalMart, one of the most anti-worker companies there is) and you've been there such a short time, if you complain they're likely to terminate your contract. I'd look for something at a better employer.0

Fair enough, I am, but it's not very easy, especially now most employers have hired for Christmas. Thank you for your reply.0

I worked for Asda one Christmas as a temp until New Years Eve. My first week was less than the contracted hours, then its steadily built up until the last couple of weeks before Christmas I ended up working something like 16 nights and only 2 nights off during that period. I was wanting (and able) to work as much as I could to go travelling so hopefully you will get a lot more hours soon. I was on the alcohol aisles and worked permanent nightshift, so there was obviously a lot being sold and plenty work available.
I 'used' them as much as they 'used' me and carried on shopping at aldi and lidls anyway0 -
Lol. Thank you for your reply. I'm hoping that December starting will be a big kick up the rear for a lot of people!.0

Asda are known for cutting back on overtime because they overspend elsewhere.0
