Pay being averaged out so its the same each month

Got TUPEd. The old company at the end of each month paid me for the hours I'd worked in that month

After receiving first pay packet with new company discovered they culculate your pay each week, multiply that by 52 then divide that by 12

In effect long and short months are evened out

It sounds ok but i think there's a problem in that 7*52 = 364

so if i work on the 365th day of the year - then i won't get paid for it.

Am i right in this assumption.

Thanks

but you aren't paid daily, they are calculating on weeks, so that 365th day will be in the next weeks pay, and included in the appropriate 1/12th of your salary

Your pay will work out the same over time tir - the majority of salaried people are paid in this way.

I don't see how it can even out over time because the year will either have 365 or 366 days in it and they calculate my pay by what i earn in 364 days

I think i could in some years working 2 days for nothing

I don't think it would ever work out that i got paid for more days than i work under this system

the only way that would happen would be if you didn't get a full weeks pay at the end of the year

for example this year ends on a Friday you aren't just going to be getting 4 days pay
  • You are correct, however, that the whole of the rest of the world give away a day's pay on leap years! :D

i could understand it if i was joining the company as a new employee - but when being tuped i thought you were not supposed to suffer any detriment

My company uses 52.2 in such calculations for this reason. (52.18 taking into account leap years and rounded up.)
But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,
Had the whole of their cash in his care.

What did your contract say? Does it say that you are paid daily, and can your number of days a week vary? Or do you work 5 days a week? Also presumably you are now paid monthly and get the same amount of pay each month regardless of length and bank holidays etc and how many days you work?

5*52 = 260 or do you work every day? I doubt you work 365 days a year

There is a potential problem here - many companies use 52.14 or a similar figure to compensate when translating an hourly rate into a salary.

However, there will be years that you may end up better off, depending on how the weekends (or whatever your days off are) fall.

I'd suspect the difference is probably going to be minimal and will probably balance out in the long run. Have you tried calculating the exact amount of gross pay you would get on either system for the next few years?

Might be worth doing to get a clearer indication of exactly how much you might end up short by, and if it's significant the work will give you something solid to present your case to management with.
