New Job but no start date

Hi Everyone
Nearly 3 months ago I applied for a new job within the local council. I attended the interview even though I only received my invitation a couple of days before the interview was scheduled. I was told that someone would contact me before the end of the week with the outcome.
Five weeks later I received a phone call out of the blue to say that there had been emergency circumstances which had prevented someone from contacting me, but I had been successful. I agreed to meet with my new employer at the beginning of the following week to go through the job requirements. I accepted the job at the meeting.
They said that it would take about four weeks for everything to be arranged. I received my contract three weeks ago and returned it on the same day with the required documents. However, five weeks have now passed and there has still been no word. I have sent a polite email asking how much longer the process is likely to take.
The employment is subject to references which were sent several weeks ago, but not a DBS check.
I would be grateful for any advice on what I can do. I don't want to come across as someone who is really demanding before I even start.
Many thanks

Public sector recruitment generally takes a long time! As you've chased it up you'll need to wait until they get back to you. If you need to give notice on your current job then wait until you've got a confirmed date, just in case there are any funding issues.0
