Scotchguard Protection on Sofa?

Just ordered a new sofa and as we were paying they asked if we wanted Scotchguard Protection.
I dithered :confused: then said "Yes we had better have it".
It costs £40 though and I'm now wondering whether it is really worth that.
Any advice or opinions would be welcomed. I have till Tuesday to cancel the Scotchguard if i want to.

PS It is a dark colour so not light cream or anything so risky
Thank you for this site :jNow OH and I are both retired, MSE is a Godsend

  • I did have it on a dark blue sofa bed we had in the playroom when the boys were younger - to be honest I am not convinced it did any good, and I don't think I would have it again on a dark coloured sofa.

    Hope this helps?!

I'd have it if I had kids and because I have cats, but be careful if you also buy insurance. Some companies will only insure against pet damage the once and only then if you say you saw the pet do the damage. (Like you'd really sit there and watch them.)

  • 3M stopped making Scotchguard in 2002 due to safety concerns.

    Teflon chemicals found in humans

I'm not sure if they're still making it over here, if it's old stock from the furniture company, or if it's a similar product, not actually Scotchguard. I personally wouldn't have it done.

I'm sure there was a thread over on one of the other boards (Vent?) and someone who'd worked for a sofa company said that most sofa's are automatically stain-guarded anyway, and it's not worth paying the extra ... It was a while ago and I can't for the life of me remember the tread title (I think it was something to do with DFS or Sofa Workshop) but it might be worthwhile having a search for it.

A few years ago we bought a sofa from one shop and a month later an armchair from another, both the same fabric. The armchair was Scotchguarded (or whatever), the sofa wasn't. The treatment doesn't seem to have made it any easier to clean stains off whatsoever! Mind you, the guarantee did say that if you can't get a stain off it, ring their helpline and they will arrange for someone to come and treat the stain - we've never got around to doing that though. Tbh it's not stains so much as general grubbiness (We used to have a cat who liked sitting on the arms). Upholstery cleaner hasn't made any difference.

Sorry, went off topic there. What I really want to say is that I wouldn't bother paying the extra for stain treatment next time.
