The problem with using the Wii U is that it often needs to interact with whats going on with the TV. It also could not be taken outside like in the car. For this reason I would probably stick with the 3DS, which has been great for our daughter who also likes lego games. It also means we get to watch a little bit more TV:money:- ET Phone Home.....0

The WiiU is NOT a handheld - so to answer your purest question, as a handheld it's as much use as a chocolate fireguard.
It's a home console & a very poorly supported one at that, almost all the major companies are avoiding it like the plague & it tends to be a first party & "toys to life" machine. It's already in the pipeline to be replaced with a replacement being heavily rumoured to be announced in 2016 with a launch possibly as early as 2016. If you can pick one up cheaply it's worth a look, but when I say cheaply, I mean I personally won't pay triple figures for one.Retired member - fed up with the general tone of the place.0 -
Nothing wrong with the Wii U. If it has the games you want on it then it fulfils it's purpose.
Lots of games can be played on the game pad, freeing up the TV, but as stated you need to stay in range of the console.0 -
If you want a handheld then 3DS. The Wii U is a home console to be played on a TV.
If price is an issue the 3DS is much cheaper.
As far as games go there are more games for the 3DS. Lego Dimensions may not be on 3DS but there are other Lego games available.
Lego Dimensions is available on the xbox 360. That is a home console, but you could get one for cheaper than a Wii U especially if bought pre-owned.0 -
If you look at the 3DS then you have to think about what model you are going to get there are currently 5 models available.
The standard 3DS that plays 3DS and DS games.
The 3DSXL same as above with bigger screens.
The 2DS as above with but without the 3D effect and it doesn't the clamshell design of the others.
Then the "new" 3DS faster processor more memory better 3D screen extra control stick NFC reader for the amibo figures and some exclusive games that wont play on an older 3DS.
The "new" 3DSXL as above with bigger screens.0
