cancel A&L D/D

Been ringing round this morning to cancel my direct debts prior to starting my DMP. Rung Alliance and Leicester and they flatly refused to cancel it. I didn't give them a reason and they didn't ask but just refused to cancel it. Anyone got any ideas? I cancelling everything my end with my bank btw.

  • I just emailed everybody and told them to cancel all so dd, and that did include A&L direct account, it was no problem, so I can't really give any advice.

    Hi rotti,

If you have access to online or telephone banking you should be able to cancel the Direct Debits yourself at your bank rather than with Alliance & Leicester (I am assuming that this is for a loan with them or something).

I imagine they are refusing to cancel the direct debit as this would mean you would miss scheduled repayments - I don't know anything about DMP - but you can definitely cancel DDs with your bank rather than with the payee (in my experience)

    Rotti,

As long as you have cancelled everything with your bank, then the creditors wont be able to get any money via DD.

Yeah I would definitely agree with this, it never occurred to me that you may be trying to cancel a dd that goes out to the same bank. I had this problem with coop bank, manage to cancel all except the one for the loan from them. As long as you get all external dds cancelled it doesn't matter, they'll soon realise that you just can't pay it. And if you say you're starting a dmp they'll get their pro rata amount.

I'm sure you are OK in your situation, rotti. But with many banks if you have a loan from the same bank, the payments are not made using a formal DD but by an internal transfer which you can't cancel and the DD guarantee rules don't apply.

I'm pretty certain this is NOT the case for A&L as A&L personal loans are from a separate company (A&L Personal Finance) not A&L plc itself.

whenever i was soooo strapped with paying direct debits I just cancelled them through my bank ( or online banking ) and NEVER rang the company. Always okay with us. Eventhough it does state 2 days before the dd is due I have cancelled them 4 hours before asI would rather this than have a £30.00 fee

Yup I had that problem with HSBC whom I had a bank account and loan with .. when i started my DMP they would not allow me to cancel my DD (by phone / online / in person / in writing!!!) just a big no no!

So I ended up setting up an account elsewhere then paying my loan payments back into my HSBC account every month for them to access ... tis a pain but it works.
