SatNav

Thinking of getting a satnav. One thing that concerns me about them is that they seem to tell you what to do too much. So for instance if I've set it to direct me to a certain place but I decide on the way that I want to take a scenic detour I don't want it telling me to turn around. If it wants it can ask me if I do indeed intend to take this route and then, if I say yes, recalculate a possible route. But I certainly don't want it nagging me to turn back.

Any solutions to this/models that deal with it better than others?

Thanks

most satnavs nag you initially to turn round but ignoring it for a short distance will force it to reroute on its own , some of the newer ones with Live Traffic updates will auto correct routes on their own if they spot a problem ahaed

you can choose to ignore Main roads etc

if you have a smart phone then try Waze or Navmii , waze is my preferred one as it has free live traffic updates

  • Probably just the more you pay the better I would say. If you go far enough then it does take a different route but I'm not sure if you can get a satnav to take you a specific route

Thanks. I do have a smart phone so perhaps I should just try using that first.
  • Another vote for Waze. I'm not sure how many people are aware it's actually owned by Google.

Waze is good. It's taken me down some amazing shortcuts that I would never have figured out unless I sat down with an A-Z for half an hour before my trip. I don't do much driving so I think I'll stick with it rather than getting a dedicated GPS unit.
  • What works for me is TomTom Go Live (my one is model 540). It is simple to use with clear instructions and very clear screen-map. With TomTom, one can opt for live traffic info but this service costs additionally. Anyone travelling frequently and travelling long distances would definitely find this service beneficial.
