P800 - Underpaid Tax but I'm PAYE?

Options
Hi all,

Basically I have had my P800 through and I have underpaid by £2300.

I am salaried and PAYE so this surprised me, so I call the number on the calculation and they have informed me that my Company Car allowance was;

2012 - 2013 - Wrong
2013 - 2014 - missing
2014 - 2015 - late (P11D not submitted until July?)

Now I tend to get number blind with all of this, which is why I have always (maybe somewhat naievely) relied on our company accountant. As it is his job to make sure this is all ok.

In 14 years I have never not had a company car? How was there no allowance in 2013 - 2014?

Can someone please advise me on how to check and chase this so I dont unneccessarily rattle cages within our company?

In my mind it is an internal !!!! up which has ended up costing me money.

Also - there appear to be others in the same boat!

Thanks in advance for all help and advise!

    what do your P11d says?
  • Im not sure - I dont have copies of them to hand.

I have asked for backdated copies of P800 and P60 from tax office to double check.

The P11D is always filled in by the accounts department.

Is there a deadline each year that this must be submitted?

How has it cost you money? If your employer and HMRC had processed the P11ds correctly, you'd have paid the tax through your wage slips. If they havn't it gets asked for via a P800. You're in the same position either way.

If HMRC have fouled up, you can ask them for time to pay over say a year. If your employer has fouled up, you can ask them for a loan to pay the tax and repay your employer over say a year.

But, you've not "lost" any money.
  • So if I have understood this correctly, my employer has to process a P11D and send it to the tax office?

They then use this to calculate my tax code.

If the P11D is incorrect then the P800 is used to work this out?

No, the P11d tells HMRC the value of your taxable benefits in kind. HMRC have no other way of knowing. They'll update your PAYE code every year or so based upon the values given on the P11d.
  • Thanks.

so the P11D has to be completed by me or our accountant?

Who is responsible to check this?

When is the latest this can be submitted?

    It's completed by your employer

Your employer should give you a copy to enable you to check that it is correct

I'm not sure if the date varies from year to year, but for tax year 2014-15 it was 6th July according to this link
