Love the distinction drawn in the report between 'raising productivity' and 'employing fewer staff' when of course they are the same thing. :rotfl:

Only if production remains the same. It could mean doing/producing more with the same number of people as at present.

Exactly. It could mean dispensing with lower paid unskilled jobs and replacing them with higher calibre staff plus more capital investment.

That presumably is the intention of a national minimum wage - to drive unskilled workers out of the economy. A bit like a scrappage scheme.

Drive low paid work out does not mean drove low skill people out of the workforce. People can always upskill and there is a constant churn of new entrant's in and retirees out. So even if you can't teach an old dog new tricks 20% of the workforce retires per decades so long term it should be OK

Try suggesting that to them. They get uppity as it's kind of suggesting that their low pay is somehow their own fault!

In other words rather than increasing employment to increase production, instead other methods not using so much Labour will be used = less employment than otherwise.
